JUDGES:
Sir Diego Rodolfo Velazquez
Sir Diego will be judging the art, weapon and armor categories.
- Art
- Art should be an original piece and may include (but is not limited to):
- Drawings
- Paintings
- Sculpture
- Prints
- Etchings
- Embossing.
- He is looking for pieces that were recently created (hopefully no more older than start of quarantine), mounted/matted for display, with obvious time put into the piece.
- The piece should be aesthetically pleasing, have good craftsmanship, and "look" finished
- Obviously, this can't apply to all art, but as a run of thumb it works well.
- Weapon
- In almost every tourney, the legal weapon is used as the example of a 3 (on a 5 point scale).
- What I look for beyond that:
- a new weapon that has not seen heavy action,
- Well-made sword cover
- Always impressive to see an irregular weapon, like an axe or a mace, get a form fitting cover!
- Light but durable
- Added flair such as embroidery
- Unique handguard/basket hilt
- Well-made pommel
- Excellent craftsmanship with little/no exposed glue, tape, etc.
- Armor
- Armor must be wearable, functional, and follow the rules of safety. Beyond this, I look for: armor displayed/presented well, good strapping, belts, attaching points, artistic embellishment (carved leather, etched steel, laquered plates). Original designs and patterns are always preferred. Craftsmanship should be obvious and well done.
Sir Margul
Sir Margul will be judging the construction, shield and accessory categories. Construction and accessory cannot include any weapons, shields or armor as those have dedicated categories. Outside of those restrictions, use your best judgement when determining if you item is fit for construction or accessory.
- Categories

Dame Nesta de'Ebonydaryth
Dame Nesta will be judging both Garb and Cooking categories. If you are interested in "shadowing" a Master Garber who is well known through-out the game, she will happily take up to 3 shadows, so please reach out to her on Facebook early or in person the morning of the event.
Scoring for both the food & garb categories: 0-5 scale, with 3 being average work. Items will be ranked highest to lowest, with the top 4 items per category earning competition points as announced by the Kingdom Regent. Notes on what Dame Nesta will be looking for in each category are below:
- Categories
- Garb
- Materials list optional, but always welcome, as is telling us a bit about your creative process
- Was this the first time you’ve made this, or did you do a gazillion prototypes to perfect it?
- Did you draft your own pattern?).
- Construction - Pretty presentation and neat finishes!
- Some example queries to guide your prep:
- Did you tie off or backstitch your threads?
- Did you finish all of your hems and seams or are there any raw edges?
- Are all of your joints/seams neat and tidy or do you have some crooked things and/or puckers?
- If you used bias tape, did you use it correctly?
- Is your satin stitching for applique smooth, close together, and covering the edges of the fabric/image?
- Is your stitching for hand or machine embroidery precise and smooth?
- For construction, does your thread color coordinate or match, or does it clash (if it clashes, why? Sometimes there’s a reason.)?
- If you used paint or dye, is it precise, consistent, smooth, etc.?
- Did you press all your seams and hems so they are sharp and neat?
- If the item is crocheted or knitted, did you block it?
- Design -
- How creative and unique is the piece? Since this is Dragonmaster, your item needs to have a WOW factor or make a visual statement.
- Some example queries to guide your prep:
- Does the outfit have multiple pieces that fit a cohesive theme?
- Did you do an intricate applique motif?
- Did you do some creative fabric/pattern piecing?
- Did you weave your own trim or make your own lace on this piece?
- Is there elaborate painting or stamping on it?
- Did you design your own machine/hand embroidery or applique motifs?
- Did you design your own crochet/knit pattern?
- Cooking
Must have ingredients list (it’s important for people to know what’s in there even if you don’t include the recipe or a full write up). Surprise allergic reactions are a bad thing. Entries without a full ingredients list will be disqualified.
Items must be kept to appropriate temperature to avoid food poisoning. This is summertime in Texas. Items meant to be stored and served cold need to be kept cold, as an example. Make arrangements to store your food based on site resources/accessibility. Keep your hands out of the food until after the competition is over and only if the person who made it told you it’s ok.
- Presentation
- Items should be neat and tidily presented.
- If there’s a reason it isn’t, put it in a write-up (you swerved to avoid someone Driving While Stupid on IH-35 and your cake went sploot in the carrier).
- If your item was cooked as one big “thing” but is cut into pieces for serving, please make sure we have a way to do so -
- We don’t want or need cross-contamination.
- If you would like to cut it yourself ahead of time, go for it.
- Taste
- Does the item taste the way one would expect?
- Does a chocolate cake taste like chocolate in some way?
- Is a sweet dish actually sweet?
- Is a savory dish actually savory?
- Creativity
- Did you invent this recipe yourself?
- Great! Tell us and toot your own horn.
- If you didn’t, please cite your recipe’s source
- tell us the creator/author and location you found it
